The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) announced its plan to adopt a blockchain-based ticketing system.
The association aims to distribute more than one million match tickets via a blockchain-based mobile app.
The UEFA indicated that the new ticketing system will make entry into the stadium easy and secure.
In addition, the ticketing system aims to prevent any fraud, forgery or duplication of tickets. The ticket code is activated automatically through the application when the fan approaches the gates of the stadium.
The UEFA officials confirmed that the application will be available for download by the end of May through Google Play or Apple Store.
Accordingly, the tickets will be distributed no less than seven days from the match date. The authority expected to distribute nearly one million tickets in 51 matches.
The UEFA said:
“Supporters who purchase ‘Follow my team’ tickets will receive their mobile tickets only once their team has qualified for a specific match. The ability to deliver mobile tickets to fans close to matchday will considerably enhance the fan journey, as fans will no longer be required to visit ticket collection points to exchange ticket vouchers.”
Sports organizers turn to blockchain
Many sports organizers turn to blockchain, as the technology promises to avoid forgery and ensures convenience.
Ashton Addison, founder of EventChain, said:
“The whole point of implementing blockchain in the ticketing industry is to bring back fairness to the artists, event organizers and fans. For example, a major problem facing the industry is counterfeit tickets.”
“Blockchain can prevent this by allowing attendees to verify the authenticity of their tickets. This also turns tickets into scarce digital assets, which are unable to be double sold,” he added.
Previously, Cryptolydian reported that Spain’s soccer club FC Barcelona (also known as Barca) has joined hands with fintech company Chiliz to create a crypto token.
Accordingly, fans can use the new token dubbed as Barça Fan Tokens ($BAR) in voting for polls and surveys through Chiliz’ Socios.com app on mobile.
